I hadn’t planned on posting a Mail Call today – it’s been several weeks since I’ve heard from any of my sponsor kids, and I didn’t expect to find such a blessing in the mailbox today. But, seeing how I can’t get the smile off my face, I thought I’d share some love with you on this New Year’s Eve.
This morning was definitely not an early morning for me. I’ve got the day off, and decided to sleep in after spending several days with my friend, Nikki, on the other side of the state. Jessica and I have movie plans tonight, so I’d planned to spend the day getting some blogging done and picking up the house.
So, after lazily rolling out of bed and taking a quick shower, I braved the cold (we’ve still got several inches of snow on the ground) and checked the mail. It was then that I spotted the glorious thing that is an over-sized cream colored envelope.
More surprising was that when opened, it revealed the sweetest letter and two amazing drawings from my sweet Helen Angela. There’s even a tiny elephant hiding out near the pond!
Historically, she hasn’t been a frequent writer, but she has always been detailed. Which means I get few letters from her, but the ones that I do get are such gems that they are well worth the wait.

This time, she answers several of my previous questions (my comments in italics)
Dear Emily,
Greetings with much love and affection! I want to tell you that my family and I are well. I want to thank God because we enjoy his blessings daily. I want to tell you that in the school I run what we have P.E. class. My favorite sport is basketball and my favorite Movie is Matilda. (I LOVE Matilda. A few letters ago, she asked me my favorite sport & movie – I answered: tennis & You’ve Got Mail. But, I’d have to say Matilda is pretty far up my list, too). I don’t take special classes to reach my goal, maybe when I get older. (She’s stated that she wants to be a cosmetologist when she grows up, so I asked her if she would be taking any special classes for it). Yes!!!!! (seriously all her exclamation points
) I love tomatoes and the sheets I read, I learned many things in them. (That’s my girl! Sweetie, you and I will feast on tomatoes one day – I’m sure of it! Also, a few months ago I sent her several pages out of a Spanish Awana handbook – those are the sheets she’s referring to.) I am doing very well in school and we were doing some experiments, it was very interesting. What season are you in? Do you like to cook? Please pray for my family’s health so we can continue on and I will continue praying for you. I say goodbye with much love. May God continue to bless you much. Christmas is coming up, I hope you have a good time with your family. When I grow up I would like to become singer and sing to God.
Helen Angela

It’s always so much fun to learn about pop culture similarities with our kids! I was so happy when we received a correspondence child in Thailand and I was able to talk about Thai movie star Tony Jaa with him. Sometimes it’s hard to find things in common with our kids in other cultures- it’s so exciting that Helen Angela likes “Matilda”! (Which is also one of my childhood favorites!)

I know, right? It’s the pop culture references that always take me by surprise. I haven’t heard of Tony Jaa, but I’m sure your correspondence child was excited that you knew of him. I bet that makes from some great letters!
Lovely letter! I always love it when I find out that I have something in common with one of my sponsored kids

Thanks! I’m the same way. With each commonality that appears, I feel like it’s another confirmation that the child was meant to be my sponsored child.
What a great letter! Her pictures are extraordinary!!! I love that you have so much in common with her! I love when God works so well to match us up.

Thanks! She is quite the artist! And it amazes me how many “little things” that line up between us – God sure knew what he was doing
